Your Options
Overview
Addressing your needs and recommending the right treatment for you.
When you’re considering a cosmetic procedure, like hair restoration, it’s vital that you feel comfortable with your physician, and that you understand their credentials and are aware of their reputation in the field. You want a highly qualified and experienced surgeon to perform your surgery, and one who you can depend on to give you realistic and honest information. After all, hair loss and hair loss treatment are not about one-size-fits-all-answers or just about graft numbers.
At the Hair Transplant Centre, your well-being is paramount, so the recommendation we make will always be ethical and right for you.
The best treatment for you could be quite different from that of a friend. But reading more about your treatment options will certainly help you decide on your next steps.
Your options can include:
- Hair Transplantation
Hair transplantation, or follicular unit grafting, is a popular, highly successful and permanent solution to correct hair loss in men, women, and more rarely, adolescents. Burn victims, scar coverage, and turban traction loss are among others that can benefit from hair transplants.
Briefly, in hair transplantation, a strip of hair bearing scalp is surgically removed, dissected into follicular unit grafts and placed into strategically angled miniature incisions where the hair loss has occurred. The new hair is not restricted in its growth or form of style, and will grow for your lifetime.
The Hair Transplant Centre uses the latest safe and tested micro-surgical techniques available.

- Drug Treatment
Your dermatologic surgeon may well recommend combining one or more of the drug treatments below with hair transplantation to enhance your results.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil (usually available in the brand name Rogaine®) is a topical solution commonly used in the treatment of androgenetic and other forms of alopecia, such as alopecia areata.
This topical drug acts as a hair growth stimulant agent when applied directly to the scalp. The advantages of this drug are that it is easy to use (you apply the medicated lotion twice daily) and that it is scientifically proven to work for many patients, both male and female. Some find that this treatment slows down hair loss, and to a lesser extent, can stimulate new hair growth. It is sometimes used in treatments where hair transplantation may not be recommended.
Finasteride
This oral medication is an aid to ceasing further loss of your original hair. To a much smaller extent, it has been known to stimulate some hair regrowth.
Finasteride (available in the brand name Propecia® and Proscar®) was originally formulated for prostate cancer. One of its noted side effects is slowing or stopping hair loss. The Hair Transplant Centre was heavily involved in clinical trials of this drug in Canada for male pattern baldness.
But like Minoxidil, this drug can’t cure baldness. Success rates vary, with patients reporting significant improvement to no improvement at all at the end of one year. Finasteride is also an ongoing lifetime treatment. You also must take it for six months before you will start to see any result. Many of our patients prefer the more immediate and lasting treatment of hair replacement therapy.
- No Treatment
It's possible that after our complimentary consultation, you may realize hair transplantation and/or drug therapy may not be able to meet your expectations. At the Hair Transplant Centre, we are always ethical and honest with our patients, and we ensure that they have realistic expectations about what can be accomplished for them.
Bear in mind, however, that baldness doesn't cure itself, and be wary of cure-all solutions that promise quick fixes.
