Transplant Procedure

Your hair grows naturally in groups of one to four hairs, referred to as "follicular units".
During your hair transplant, we surgically remove a strip of hair bearing scalp, which is then carefully dissected into follicular unit grafts and placed into strategically angled miniature incisions where your hair loss has occurred.

Almost 100% of your hair bulbs transplanted at our clinic by our medical team will grow and live as long as you do.

Let’s take a closer look:

  • 1. First we take a strip of hair-bearing scalp from the permanent donor area at the back and sides of your scalp where your hair is abundant and not subject to androgenetic hair loss. This is called Strip Harvesting. The size of the strip will be dependent on the number of grafts required within the limits of the size and flexibility of your scalp (i.e. greater flexibility generally means a larger strip). In addition, we are always careful to harmonize our work with any future changes as your hair pattern alters with age.

  • 2. We do not staple the area from which the strip was taken. Instead, we take the time to hand suture, which may lead to less scar tissue and certainly is more comfortable for you. This very much fits in with our ethos of a caring environment and our focus on your comfort. Stitches are generally removed a week later.

  • 3. We then carefully dissect the harvested strip under magnification into hair units. The skill of our medical team ensures that these removed hair follicles will produce the highest number of healthy hair grafts. A graft can contain between 1 to 3 hairs (and rarely, 4 hairs).

  • 4. After consultation with you about the careful design of your new hairstyle, we implant each hair graft into minute incisions in your area lacking hair. We use various angled incisions to recreate natural hair patterns that blend seamlessly with your existing hair and provide the greatest coverage. Dense packing is a popular goal; however, our surgeons are careful to balance dense packing with overall graft survival as very densely packed hair grafts may lead to reduced hair graft growth.

  • 5. The transplanted roots take an average of 3 months to regrow to the scalp’s surface. This new hair grows as normal hair does - which is a quarter to half an inch per month. At about 6 to 9 months you’ll start to see a large difference, which is always very rewarding. Areas that were balding will now have healthy hair that is growing naturally because it IS your own natural hair. The new hair will grow for your lifetime.

Our Approach

At the Hair Transplant Centre, we take a different approach from many other hair transplant companies. We know that it is easy to become sidetracked by numbers and marketing techniques. This is why you want to have a trusted and ethical surgeon who takes the time to accurately diagnose your condition and designs a hair transplant that looks good now and in the future regardless of any changing hair loss pattern.

Our approach is always what will work best for you, and to be realistic about what can be achieved – ensuring a natural approach that will work with any future changes in your hairline while providing the greatest coverage that is medically advisable.

Scalp flexibility is one of the factors in how many hair bulbs can be taken from your donor area. More flexibility generally means a larger strip of hair can be taken.
